Hospitable Futures: Melbourne Solo Dining
Brief
This project is an exploration into and analysis of experiences within Melbourne’s hospitality industry. What are some of the unique selling points of the industry in this particular space? How does it continue to engage with its ever-shifting clientele of a culturally diverse population? Over the span of six weeks we were tasked with researching our niche and artfully presenting our observations with a ‘leave behind’.
Solution
We were curious about the cultural context of solo dining in Melbourne, and how this compares to other cities around the world; how is Melbourne better or worse at catering to different types of solo diners? Using our original quadrant framework, we tested and categorized establishments across the city, and developed the Solo Dining Experience Quadrant. We produced a pocket-sized booklet with an interactive map and #TableForOne badge to advocate for solo dining and why it should exist as a necessary act of self-care. With this booklet we hoped to encourage Melbournians enjoy dining alone and to start wherever they felt most comfortable.
