Little Tiger Childrens’ Books
Brief
In 2018 I was commissioned by the Singapore Wildlife Action Group (SWAG) to illustrate a children’s book series that would follow the adventures of a daring little tiger cub as it journeyed across Southeast Asia, meeting various other wildlife and manmade hurdles along the way. These stories were written by Linda Gan, an accomplished author of numerous early education literacy materials.
The aim of the Little Tiger project was to educate children on the dangers that certain endangered species face following human encroachment into their natural habitat. Funds raised from book sales would also be used to support wildlife conservation.
In this project I acted as both illustrator and graphic designer; working on everything from initial storyboarding sketches to the final print-ready layout of the books.
Solution
The Little Tiger project turned into a series of four books; Little Tiger, Little Tiger in Myanmar, and Little Tiger and the Snow Leopard, and Little Tiger and the Leopard Cat.
I worked closely with the author to bring the story to life while creating colorful, dynamic, and engaging illustrations. I used a variety of composition techniques to create varying moods, alternating between abstract and more literal imagery.
The project also required communication with various biologists for their expertise on the unique characteristics of the animals involved. While stylizing characters to create interest, it was also important to ensure that they would be identifiable as unique to the region.
Book Launch
In September of 2019 I traveled to Singapore to attend a launch and signing for the first Little Tiger book at the National Library of Singapore.
The event consisted of games, arts and crafts, and a live reading of the books by the author. It was a joy to see the children engaged by the vivid illustrations in the book.
